ETHER recently participated at the IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC) 2024 held in Dubai from April 21-24. This year’s edition of the WCNC, which was themed “Wireless Communications for Growing Opportunities,” provided a platform to engage in meaningful discourse on propelling the next generation of wireless communication and networking technology forward.

Organized by the IEEE Communications Society, this conference is renowned for fostering dialogue among industry professionals, academics, and government entities. Project coordinator, Dr Konstantinos Ntontin (University of Luxembourg), attended the conference to present the ETHER project in a workshop focused on 6G Architecture.

The workshop delved into the critical evolution towards 6G architecture, exploring key innovations necessary for future mobile telecommunications networks. The introductory keynote by Volker Ziegler from Nokia titled ‘Architecture to shape the 6G future’, shedded light on the evolving landscape of network architecture and its pivotal role in driving the 6G era. Participants discussed various thematic topics including network infrastructure, spectrum utilization, scalability, sustainability, and security, among others. Notably, the workshop drew insights from the vibrant 5G PPP and Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) research community, providing reference architectural solutions.

The workshop presented an opportunity for Ntontin to give a presentation on the 6G Architectural Framework for 3D Multi-Layered Networks. Moreover, in the workshop’s panel discussion on network sustainability, he shared his thoughts alongside esteemed panelists Volker Ziegler (Nokia), Hassan Osman from Real Wireless, and moderator Marco Gramaglia (UC3M) on shaping the future of wireless communications.
